Society Fellow, Stephen Garton, elected as President of the Australian Academies of Humanities

The Society was delighted to learn that one of its Fellows, and also the Librarian of the Society, Professor Stephen Garton AM FRSN FAHA FASSA, was elected by the Australian Academy of the Humanities as its twentieth President. Professor Garton will serve a three-year term commencing in 2024.

Professor Garton’s research expertise is Australian history. He has also published in the fields of American and British history. His major books provide thought-provoking insights into areas including the history of medicine, particularly psychiatry, social welfare, war veterans and the aftermath of war, sexuality, and the history of higher education.

Stephen Garton has also had an extensive career in university management, serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and also as interim Vice-Chancellor, at the University of Sydney. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to tertiary education administration and to history.

The Council of the Society extends its warm congratulations to Professor Garton on this further recognition of his standing as an eminent scholar and researcher in the humanities.
