The second of the Society’s new lunchtime series, ‘Provocations and Inspirations’, was held on Tuesday, 15 April 2025 at the Union, University and Schools Club (UUSC).
In this presentation, titled Extreme Earth: Antarctica’s climate warning for the future and what we can all do about it, Professor Chris Turney, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Technology Sydney and a renowned climate scientist, delivered a challenging and thought-provoking talk on the impact of global warming on Antarctica.
His talk emphasised the fragility of the West Antarctic ice sheet from recent research that has revealed the worrying acceleration in ice mass loss, rising sea level and temperatures, and the implications for communities across Australia and worldwide should a ‘tipping point’ be reached. Despite these concerns, his talk showed that there is hope that this vast region might help avert the worst impacts of a changing climate, and what we collectively can do to take the necessary action.
