On Wednesday, 5 May, Professor Michael Blumenstein FACS of the University of Technology Sydney, a highly-cited researcher in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), delivered a fascinating lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence myths debunked — how AI is transforming humanity for the global good”. This talk is now available on YouTube. In his presentation, Michael Blumenstein discussed current trends in AI, highlighting a range of applications and cutting-edge technologies developed at UTS, including SharkSpotter which has been the subject of substantial national and international acclaim. He went on to discuss how AI can be used to enhance and even save people’s lives, as well as transform businesses and the economy. The talk was particularly pertinent, coming in the same week in which the potential dangers in the technology were highlighted by the resignation from Google of Dr Geoffrey Hinton, regarded as the ‘Godfather of AI’, so that he could speak about such concerns.
