The latest composition from Dr David Hush FRSN, “Three Pieces for Solo Flute”, is dedicated to, and has been recorded by, Dr Danielle Eden. Dr Eden has played flute and piccolo with Opera Australia for the past 20 years. “Three Pieces” may be heard on Akiva Recordings.

David is known for channelling J S Bach, and each piece has “a special connection to J S Bach”. He writes:

• Overture — The form of the first movement is founded on the French baroque model: an opening section in medium tempo imbued with dotted rhythms; a fast contrasting middle section; a reprise of the opening section. The composition of an overture for solo flute is unusual and presents a special challenge to the interpreter.
• Sarabande — The second movement reflects Bach’s interest in the two-part binary form and has an introspective mood which recalls Bach’s own Sarabande from his Partita for Solo Flute. The Sarabande closes with a dramatic cadenza-like coda designed to highlight the interpreter’s virtuosity.
• Prelude à JSB — As the title may suggest, there is a close connection to the music of Bach. Rather than recall Bach’s music for solo flute the Prelude draws more on the composer’s writing for solo violin. In particular, the wide registral skips within the context of unfolding sequences are strongly evocative of techniques favoured by Bach in his music for solo violin.
